I enjoyed reading about the life of a remarkable woman and her interesting and accomplished family.  María’s heritage, how her family evolved, and how circumstance affected her life was heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time.  It amazes me that, not only did she not give up, she constantly moved in a forward direction, and by example, so did her children.

I appreciated and enjoyed the memoir that the author recounted in her novel. There is an undercurrent that transcends the story:  the quiet ascension of the Mexican-American female and her struggle for identity in a dominant culture. The assimilation and acculturation shared by Maria and her children is courageous and admirable.

Throughout the story I often thought of my own mother and her struggles that were very similar to Maria's:  my mother was a single mother raising four young girls in Los Angeles while fighting for her own identity and place in the world, and within her own family. I am most drawn to the educational component in the story and how this facilitated a better life for Maria and all her children. I look forward to Gloria’s next novel!
