In today’s age of questionable morals, the relationship María had would most certainly be fodder for one of those horrifying travesties that masquerade as helpful talk shows today.  So the fact that a relationship between María and her brother-in-law existed so many years ago would be considered shocking by any moral compass.  And yet...never did I feel that this was a woman of loose morals.  It’s pretty obvious she was manipulated and was trying to recapture the warmth and safety she felt from her uncle in Mexico City.

The author has crafted a compelling tale of a woman with a deep and abiding love of family and God who perseveres against the odds again and again, never complaining when circumstances try to wrench her family from her.  It would have been so easy for the author to fall into the trap of “trying” to justify her Mother’s actions and mold the story to be “sympathetic”.  She did not.  The story is presented so naturally and so beautifully that you can’t help but cheer for María at every step.

Thank you, Gloria, for sharing your mother’s life with us.  Your writing kept me intrigued and wanting to turn to the next page.  I felt like I could identify with some of Maria’s innermost feelings as I read the poignant tale of this vulnerable, innocent and humble woman.   There is no doubt she was taken advantage of by Ezequiel.  One only wishes she had learned early in her life he was not the appropriate man for her.  Yet, in spite of her struggles, she maintained her inner beauty and poise.

Maria is smiling from somewhere and in her glory knowing that her daughter wrote this memoir dedicated to her and her family.  What a wonderful tribute!
